It’s no secret that my face has been plagued with dark circles since I popped out the womb. Like black clouds looming over my face, they’re present morning and night, day in day out, and concealer has never really worked out for me.
Before I get into this, I’d like to clear something up. My dark circles are the hereditary kind (and to be honest, I think most are). Having thinner skin around your eyes and naturally darker pigmentation means that, for people like me, these dark circles are a part of life.
If you don’t know what it is to have dark circles, you will likely find this whole spiel hard to comprehend. Dark circles are my biggest beauty gripe. Forget my temperamental cystic acne and untameable female moustache, dark circles are my biggest bugbear. They make me look possessed, angry and slightly unhinged. Even when I am not in any of those states.
The truth is that although skincare and various treatments may be able to help a little in the appearance of those pesky rings, nothing can eradicate them. In fact, I’m sure I’ve tried almost every brightening eye cream under the sun, including some that ‘celebs swear by’ with price tags that make me want to cry, and nothing does the job. So, if you can’t beat them, conceal them.
First up is the NARS Soft Matte Concealer. Being a girl that is usually all about #glow, I’d never really given a matte concealer a chance so it was a bit of a big deal for me to pick this up. What appealed to me the most was the pot. I love that I can just bop the product on with my fingers and be done. After nearly 6 months of using it day in day out, I’ve gotta tell you something – this s*** is the BOMB. It’s formulated with a concoction of Vitamins A, C and E and also contains the mother of moisture, Hyaluronic Acid. It’s concealer that helps plump, hydrate and blur. Above all, the coverage is next to none. I honestly can’t remember what I did before this.
Next up is the Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer from IT Cosmetics. I’ve just got a lil mini size but to be frank, it’s all I need. This stuff is INDUSTRIAL. The texture is almost putty like. It’s heavy and a little bit tough to work in but my god it could cover up pretty much anything. Again, it’s formulated with HA, tonnes of vitamins and peptides to keep skin looking juicy.
Now for the concealer du jour. The bareMinerals BAREPRO® 16-hr Full Coverage Concealer seems to have everyone talking and for good reason. It’s insanely creamy and comes in a very handy stick, perfect to pop in your handbag for the day ahead. It comes in 15 shades (which I think is a super impressive offering) meaning you’re way more likely to find the perfect match. The coverage is slightly lighter (but still really bloody good) and it contains bamboo stem extract to help lessen the appearance of pores which is a total win in my books.
Lastly is the latest concealer launch from Laura Mercier. For years, people have raved about the Secret Camouflage Concealer, but now it’s all about this newbie. The Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Concealer is crease-resistant, easy to apply and stays all day. I’d say the coverage leans towards the medium side of medium-full, but I like to have something a bit lighter for those no-makeup-makeup days.
So, for now, I can say dark circles be gone (within reason) and live my life happy in the knowledge that I have something to keep them at bay. If any of you guys have any dark circle eradicators that you swear by, please do let me know!
